Bob Harris is an American film actor, far past his perfection. He visits Tokyo to appear in commercials, and he meets Charlotte, the young wife of a visiting photographer. Bored and exhausted, Bob and Charlotte make ideal whether or not improbable traveling companions. Charlotte is looking with respect to "her place in life," and Bob is tolerating a middling stateside marriage. Both separately and cheek by jowl, they live the experience of the American in Tokyo. Bob and Charlotte give leave to both confusion and hilarity due to the cultural and speech differences between themselves and the Japanese. As the propinquity between Bob and Charlotte deepens, they tend hitherward to the realization that their visits to Japan, and unit another, must soon end. Or must they?
